How to build a ranged boss and keep useful distance

Make Cannon, Laser and Rocket builds work with spacing, Counterstrike, heat management and matchup-specific defenses.

Use weapons with compatible reach, select movement that preserves firing distance, and check whether the opponent reflects projectiles. Watch energy and heat before concluding that a fast weapon is dealing steady damage.

Choose a distance you can maintain

A pair of qualifying ranged weapons activates Artillery for an 8% ranged damage increase. Cannons, rockets and lasers qualify, as do several later Arsenal weapons. Tesla is not part of that recipe.

Counterstrike can back away when a suitable ranged build gets too close. It cannot make the arena infinitely wide: walls, enemy pulls and damaged mobility can still force contact. A ranged plan needs a fallback for the moment the enemy catches it.

Projectiles and beams solve different defenses

Cannon and Rocket shots can be returned by a frontal Reflector. Pulse Laser bypasses reflection, but its high heat can interrupt repeated firing. Avoid reading a weapon’s nominal cooldown as guaranteed sustained damage.

Point-blank Cannon and Rocket hits receive a damage penalty. If your machine repeatedly fires at contact distance, inspect whether a shorter-range secondary weapon is pulling the whole build forward or whether enemy control is preventing retreat.

Fix the bottleneck you observe

If the machine faces the enemy but pauses firing, inspect heat and battle energy. If it keeps turning, consider chassis turn delay and enemy Dash. If it retreats but still gets caught, examine weight and mobility rather than spending on weapon damage alone.

Try one change per test: a different weapon pairing, a different body for energy, or a support swap. A ranged boss is strongest when range, resources and movement support the same plan. A collection of individually attractive parts can still work against itself.
